- Matters arising from the minutes of the last meeting:
- A School TSP web page was to be made available. [Tim Lambert]
- The Database Cluster was to provided a detailed proposal for
Database course revision. [John Shepherd]
- Review of plans for Potter Committee to present its report to
the School at a School Meeting. [John Potter]
Only John Shepherd was available to follow up on these matters.
He presented a plan to replace the current database courses by
COMP3311/9031 and COMP4311/9316, plus a number of advanced courses,
only a limited number of which would be offered in any one year.
The prerequisite for COMP3311/9031 would be COMP1021, and for
COMP4311/9316 would be COMP2011/9024 and (COMP3311/9031 or INFS1603).
COMP3311/9031 would have the title "Introduction to Database Systems"
and COMP4311/9316 would have the title "Implementation of Database
Management Systems".
Descriptions of these courses will be made available shortly, and
staff are encouraged to comment on them. The committee resolved that
the proposed revision would go to the next HoSAC meeting, subject
to comments provided by staff.
- COMP9022 in second sessions. We are currently feeling the displeasure
of PG students who have been forced to enrol in COMP2021 in second
session because COMP9022 is currently only run in first session.
Should we reconsider on this? Should all/popular/core PG courses
have repeat lectures so that they are available day and evening?
Particularly UG/PG pairs like COMP3231/9201, COMP3131/9102,
COMP3111/9008, COMP3121/9101 (using second session examples)?
John Shepherd will introduce the discussion.
It was resolved that it is desirable to offer COMP9022 in both
sessions, and this will be done subject to the availability of
staff to teach it.
- Requirements for class managers and associate lecturers for 2001.
It has been suggested that enough class managers should be recruited
to cover courses with an enrolment (in a particular session) over
a threshold (possibly 300).
Class Manager Job Spec
Item deferred.
- Should COMP1021, which will be offered in summer session, also be
badged as COMP9021?
COMP9021 will be offered in summer session jointly with
COMP1021.
A group of three research students would share the teaching
under the direction of Tim Lambert.
- Teaching allocation for 01s1.
A slightly less preliminary draft allocation is now shown at:
2001 session 1 allocation
- ELEC have, in JAS's words "bitten the bullet on 4th year Thesis vs
Project and introduced a new Project subject for students with
low averages (specifically, less than 65%)." This is somewhat consistent
with the practice in the Advanced Science program and of course in
Computer Science of only letting students with 65+ averages do
honours. Do we want to review our policy on this?
Item deferred.
- Quality assurance measures for teaching. Should we be having an
extra person (perhaps a program coordinator or director of first
year studies) acting in a specific quality assurance role for each
course we offer?
Item deferred.
- Formal introduction of a new Special Project for
talented students in Computer Science.
Item deferred.
- The School has received information from the Australian Computer
Society on accreditation of university programs by the Society.
Should we consider having our programs accredited by this
organization, as well as by IEAust?
Carroll Graham's comment
It was resolved that we would seek ACS accreditation if it
was possible to do this without significant extra amounts of work
beyond what would be required for IEAust approval.
- Proposal for Master of Engineering Science
in Mobile Systems.
Item deferred.
- New course proposal: "Greenspun" course. [JAS]
The new course proposal for COMP4619 Web Applications Engineering
was approved. The prerequisite for the first run of this course will
be COMP2011, plus program authority approval.
