Hi there! I'm Elizabeth, and I'm running for CSESoc Co-president and Secretary.

I'm currently a second year Computer Science/Advanced Science student, and one of the CSESoc Outreach Directors for 2023.

You might have seen me around running different CSESoc events such as Pride on Ice ⛸️, posting on the discord server about CSESoc logo changes πŸ“° or just chilling at weekly BBQ's β€‹πŸŒβ€‹.

Through my experience with CSESoc these past two years I have seen the impact this society can have, from helping people form friendships, to giving students the confidence to tackle technical interviews. I've also seen all the potential for growth CSESoc has, to continue fostering a supportive community for CSE students and as such would love to help make this happen as part of the exec team for 2024!

Visions for 2024 πŸš€β€‹πŸŒ•β€‹

After thinking about all the potential ways to grow CSESoc and create an open community where people are able to both develop and have fun here are the key aims I have for next year.

Foster Inclusivity In all We Do

What this looks like:
  • Create events a diverse range of students feel comfortable coming to through more collaboration πŸ€β€‹ with societies that have different target demographics e.g., WIT, ACYA, Culture Cafe
  • Opening the Discord Community - Making it more friendly for everyone
    • Create chats for different groups people identify as e.g., women πŸ‘©, queer πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆβ€‹, international 🌍 to connect people from similar backgrounds
    • Have a newcomer chat πŸ€β€‹ for people who have been members of the server for <2 weeks
  • Providing resources πŸ“šβ€‹ that represent a more diverse range of students e.g., 2nd+ years, internationals, LGBTQIA+ students
    • Breaking down the CSE Student stereotype
    • Postgraduate Guide
    • Top 10 things to know as an International Student
  • More consistent events catered towards particular group of students (rather than one event a term for a given demographic)

Relevant & Hands-on Development

What this looks like:
  • Bringing in industry reps to provide coding workshops πŸ’»β€‹ on relevant/interesting tools utilised in industry
  • Provide professional skill development when needed i.e., holding mock technical interview, resume workshops close to and during recruitment periods
    • Creating a series of Career Workshops πŸ“β€‹ that build upon each other, each focusing on a different aspect in helping students apply for job roles
    • In addtion, more and consistent hands-on and practical career events over tech talks
  • Greater international job opportunity advertisement 🌍 and help with aquirement of overseas role
    • Increasing CSESoc's collaboration with overseas tech companies
    • Create guides & collate industry rep advice on applying overseas
  • Larger variety of workshop & career talks:
    • Product management
    • UX/UI
  • More career events hosted at company offices e.g., hackathons

Community Feedback + Ideas Loop

What this looks like:
  • Creating more avenues for people to provide ideas + feedback πŸ€šβ€‹
    • Actively promoting feedback & suggestions channels in discord, setting up systems to enable students to provide feedback via multiple platforms e.g.,facebook, instagram or the CSESoc Website
  • From provided feedback a monthly CSESoc Exec Update within the CSESoc newsletter πŸ“°β€‹ on how we've actioned feedback given
  • Termly townhalls/ focus groups πŸ—£οΈβ€‹ to get a grasp of what you guys want
  • Incentivising student to give feedback on events through providing prizes πŸŽβ€‹ e.g., discounts on future event tickets
  • Let anyone in the CSE community have a say on what events we run for the term, by publishing preliminary event schedules/ideas πŸ—“οΈβ€‹ on CSESoc platforms to gauge community interest
  • Be an avenue for students to provide feedback back to the school

Internal Structure & Processes

What this looks like:
  • Creating specific upskilling workshops ⬆️ for subcom e.g., Confluence & Jira intro workshops
  • Introduction of a 2nd+ year or termly volunteering subcom πŸ™Œβ€‹ to allow for a larger/more diverse range of students to be part of subcom
    • Termly Subcom: For those looking for a more lowkey/casual subcom committment
  • Having open channels of communications πŸ‘‚β€‹ between CSESoc and all it's associated societies i.e., DevSoc & CompClub πŸ€©β€‹ so that we are able to support each other and thrive together
  • Facilitating easier and smoother communication between teams through setting up clearer guidelines how in advance each team must be notified of things
    • E.g., careers team must be notified to attain sponsor reps
