The University of New South Wales

Eng Aust Recommendations from 2021

R1

Review the curriculum in all schools to ensure consistency in

  1. content of courses, assessment timing and pre-requisites considering the movement to trimesters

  2. the quality of online material (particularly important in the move to a hybrid model)

  3. the availability of suitable core courses across the three semesters (especially in T2)

  4. availability of advice to students on study pathways

  5. teaching of ethics, sustainability and safety throughout the programs, not just in a single subject

R2

Consider expanding the number of (and support for) Education Focused roles in all schools and levels of the programs and offer further encouragement for the general improvement in teaching standards through peer observations, mentoring, and professional development.

R3

Encourage staff and students to actively engage with relevant professional bodies.

R4

Review membership of Industry Advisory Committee’s to ensure a broader representation and appropriate numbers. In addition, consider reviewing TORs to enable the IAC to be chaired by an industry representative.

R15

The secondary report on the implementation of the Faculty Quality Assurance Plan (M2), due on 15 December 2022 was removed and replaced with a Recommendation for Improvement (R15) to be addressed at the next General Review in 2026.

The Faculty take an overarching Quality Assurance role to ensure that all schools:

  1. Have a consistent approach to, and format for, curriculum mapping.

  2. Develop and adopt a standardised course outline format for all schools to ensure appropriately and consistently written Course Learning Outcomes which accurately describe each course.

  3. Develop and review in consultation with appropriate stakeholders an integrated specification of graduate outcomes for each discipline of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering programs.

  4. Disseminate CLOs, integrated graduate specifications and Stage 1 competencies in a consistent and clear format to students as a key reference for reflection on progressive development.

  5. Have active and engaged Industrial Advisory Boards which have appropriate Terms of Reference and membership, and consistent meeting and reporting time frames and procedures that effectively allow for continuous improvement of the graduate specification of the relevant program and curriculum.

  6. Have a consistent approach to monitoring and supporting students considered ‘at risk’

  7. Rigorously implement Academic Integrity processes and follow up.
