- DeWitt/Stonebraker criticised this
- return to low-level model of data access
- all done before in distributed DB research
- misses efficiency opportunities affored by DBMSs
- concensus is emerging
- SQL/MapReduce good for different kinds of task
- MapReduce as a basis for SQL-like languages (e.g. Apache HiveQL)
