Yeah. I'm not really using it to its full potential; I'm more interested in the 
sleep function than its original backup role. 

In the end, I've decided to disable the BAT3 batteries altogether - my external 
batteries are huge, and experience says that NiMH batteries that aren't 
purpose-built for cold, crap out at -40 anyway. The sleep timer seems to work 
fine without them.
