You might find this interesting, if a bit too long, - an ant hill with a
pair of Schaller Oyster (piezo) guitar pickups. In the last 3 min or so, a
piezo lifted from an old TI pocket notebook glued to the top of a tin can.

I also tried mounting the Schallers on a tongue depressor to get a better
stereo image -needs more experimentation to get the spacing right.
I haven't done much with this since '13, (been distracted with other
things, but I still lurk here occasionally), but I did also try the
Schallers held to a tree with one of those ratcheting straps for a cartop
carrier. Was interesting for recording carpenter ants at work.
I love the idea of the woodpecker. That was on my list too, as there are
quite a few Pileated Woodpeckers in the same wood where this was shot.
