< Wonderful things, like the sound of a bear munching on a salmon, and back=
ground birdsong. >
Not to be a spoiler, but almost without exception the sounds of animal phys=
ical activity (not vocalization, but movement,) in nature programs are Fole=
y, i.e. dubbed by studio technicians crunching celery stalks, padding about=
in leaf filled pits, snapping twigs, etc. Foley artists also do all the do=
or slams, glass breaks, gunshots, body slams, etc. in film & TV. The ambien=
ces are 'real' & might possibly even correspond to the approximate time & l=
ocation of the film shoot, but generally it's simply impossible to place a =
microphone in a location which corresponds to the point of view of an extre=
mely long telephoto lens. So, enjoy the music free nature programming, but =
realize that the non-vocal sounds of animals moving about their daily busin=
ess are really mostly man-made.
