For a beginner, I'd stick to my original advice and keep it simple.
However, we are talking about using the built-in mic pair which by
definition can't be put at the small focal point of a parabola. A mic
pair will sound better at an off-focus distance anyway so the
parabolic theory doesn't apply. We are hung up on the theory of a
parabola but it only focusses at one small point in one direction.
I've tried different curved shapes including a spherical wok lid from
the kitchen and they all produce results. Even a flat reflector as a
barrier works giving a 6dB forward boost and a near cardioid response.
Try a plastic umbrella. :-)
If anyone wants to challenge the above, work out the size of the Airy
disk at different frequencies. :-)
