The 2 easiest solutions is either a threaded insert or a t-nut.
Here is a t-nut at Woodcraft.com: t-nut

Here is a page of threaded inserts at SmallParts.com: threaded inserts

The one you want, if you have a 1/4" 20 tripod screw (which is US
standard) is this one <http://tinyurl.com/24oedqx>
Both are installed in wood & are easier to deal with than futzing around
with nuts, glue, etc.
To install the t-nut you drill a 5/16" hole & tap in the shaft until
the prongs sink into the wood.
To install the threaded insert you drill a 3/8" hole & screw the insert
into the wood using a hex wrench.
Both can be purchased at your local big-box hardware store, if you must,
or find a woodworking supply shop (they're quite fun to browse for
ideas!).
