but is it really true?
i have been recording professionally from 1976 (i was an amateur before the=
n) - and my feeling is that overall competence has risen, not fallen as a r=
esult of technology change.
one reason can be expectations. the best an amateur could do before there w=
as the sony TCD5 M, was extremely poor. Nobody paid much attention to what =
they recorded, or how.=A0That was left for the big boys with Nagras and=A0I=
remember what a struggle it could be with a Nagra=A03 and low output headp=
hones.
i have seen the surprise and pleasure of people when they first get to hand=
le a recorder that=A0 provides a decent result. for a certain per centage o=
f people, it is the beginning of learning, adventure. the others might be a=
majority, but it gives me a good deal of pleasure to see one person takes =
those first steps, which would not have happened in an earlier period.
