The elk rut sounds seem to peak in late Sept, early Oct. Spending a
week in elk country in June, I heard a bugle once during the whole
week. The elk seem to like the cooler weather and really get going
with the frosty temperatures. I'm not sure how late a protected herd
would call but in areas where they are hunted the calling drops off
once the guns come out. Actually, the calling drops off even before
the guns come out in areas that are hunted, the elk are just more
wary, more spread out, and there are fewer large and mature bulls
still alive from previous years.
