No, but it's a nice thing to do. One might say into the recording
"ambient level 42 dBA slow."

So far as I know, firewire on the Sound Devices products is for
connection to computers for transfer only. Using it with an input
interface is a great idea, though, and I encourage you to write to SD
about supporting that.
