Hi Jim
It puzzled me too.
It could be that the headpiece is held firm against the head by
inflateable cushions that fit around the ears. In which case the
"stethoscope" tubes would be used by the operator to inflate the
cushions until they were comfortable and held the apparatus firmly to
the head. There seems to be a mouthpiece at the end of the tube.
No need to agonise over choice of mic/recorder when using this. But
would it be true stereo?
