Jim has raised a good point about the small animals chewing the cable. It is
wise to carry a roll of aluminum foil to areas where this is possible.
Wrapping alum foil around the cable and securing it with plastic ties, or
plastic electrical tape, will keep most small animals from chewing on it. It
is also possible to roll the cable back up when the time comes. There are
more robust ways of defeating the critters that do this, but this is the
fast light-weight way to do it. When you don't want the cable to be covered
anymore it is easy to remove the foil.
This also works on house cats that want to chew high voltage cords and
computer cables.

Mike - I haven't found any color preference, any electrical cable will do.
Also your mic could be in danger as they could sever the cable and haul the
mic off to their nest or just chew up the mic.
