Many frogs make underwater calls. This is particularly true in the
Ranids. The first part of the clip I have on my Georgia frogs site for
Gopher Frogs is a hydrophone recording. A major part of the time the
gopher frog calls you hear are made by frogs that are completely submerged.
Since I'm usually recording in pretty shallow water it can occasionally
get tricky as sound interference patterns are different underwater. I
have along a extendable pole to reach through the brush to get the
hydrophone to the water. Try various positions for the best sound, not
really any different from recording above water.
I should do more underwater recording than I do, the underwater calls
are not well documented, though often they differ little from what we
hear above water. Often the underwater calling is earlier season.
