Try a test between 48 (not 44.1) and 192 kHz,
with the same source audio.
Then pick the one you think sounds "best", blindly.
Results have shown that exactly half of VERY professional
ears pick the 48 kHz version as sounding the best.
I have much respect for people with good hearing, but they
tend to overestimate the importance of oversampling.
Also, say you have a samplerate of 44.1 kHz
and a source 24 kHz tone will be picked up
by your microphone and amps;
This will cause a not so loud anti-aliasing artifact
around 20 kHz. Many of us will translate the artifact
as "warm and airy", not as cold digital distortion.
