Thank you, Ariadne Angulo, for the pointer to the acoustic monitoring
equipment used by the Tropical Ecology, Assessment and Monitoring
(TEAM) Initiative at Conservation International (CI).
The current equipment and recording protocol is described at

http://www.teaminitiative.org/application/resources/pdf/Acoustic_4_1_05.pdf

The TEAM hardware consists of a PDA, microphone and external battery
pack sufficient to run the equipment for two weeks without attention.
The recorder fits into a small waterproof case with connector for the
microphone.

Recordings are controlled by scheduling software written by CI. The
TEAM protocol calls for 12 minutes of recording at dusk each day, but
recordings can be scheduled at any time. One clever feature of the
software is that it can adjust for the change in the time of sunset as
the days pass.

The equipment and packaging is designed for rugged use, and the system
has been field-tested for about a year in tropical conditions.
