I've been researching and surveying the Sunshine Coast population of the
Ground Parrot. The Sunshine Coast in Queensland is home to one of the few
remaining mainland populations of this endangered species.
I've concluded that less than 40 birds are hanging on at four sites, and
numbers are in decline. Surprisingly, the most important site is the
Sunshine Coast Airport. A viable population of Ground Parrot lives inside
the airport fencing and experts believe its survival is essential to the
future of the Sunshine Coast population. However, the birds are threatened
by plans to extend the east-west runway at the airport.
