Dear B-A,
While in Cambodia recently, I was talking to a couple of birders who
had just been to Ang Traepang Thmaw to see Sarus Cranes. They asked me
if I knew to which other subspecies they were more closely related to,
the Indian, Grus antigone antigone or the Eastern, G. antigone
sharpii. I did not have a clue, but said that I would try to find out.
I have done a bit of net dredging, but have not been able to find a
clear answer. Does anyone on B-A have any ideas? Has there been any
DNA work that might sort them out? I was also asked if the Australian
ssp. was related to the extinct Philippines ssp. Any information would
be most gratefully accepted.
Cheers,
Carl Clifford
