A Black-necked Stork (immature) recently turned up in suburban Lilli Pilli
in southern Sydney. This birds plumage (beginning to gain head gloss but
still dark mantle) indicated it may have been over 1-2 years old. The bird
was emaciated and unable to do more than stand on its hocks. However after
three weeks of good nutrition and physiotherapy from a WIRES volunteer it
was released at Shortland Wetland Centre near Newcastle. The bird
immediately flew and after an hour of circling disappeared to the west. Has
anybody got any records of others been seen around the Sydney Basin in the
last few years?
