Good point! Maybe next year instead of reporting how many birds per observer
we could report how many birds per total km travelled to get to the site -
people like me who went a long way would end up with kms per bird (bad!) but
people like the Bundy Birders in their garden would have lots of birds per
km (good!).
When the original armchair twitch - then called a sitathon - was introduced
(at least 10 years ago) we hadn't heard of carbon emissions (though we had
heard of fossil fuels) and it was only a competition about skill in knowing
habitats well enough to choose the best spot as well as in identification by
hearing and by sight. The Birds Queensland Twitch combines both by having
various environmentally friendly options like walking and Eco twitch where
you can walk, ride a bike, or use public transport.
Congratulations Bundy Birders! (59 in a Bundaberg garden).
