When it comes to water, the 'one size fits all' premise that seems to
underlie government policy needs review. When we had a dam built on our
property we were limited to one megalitre (it's based on land area). The
bulldozer finished work on a Wednesday afternoon and it rained that night.
By Thursday evening the dam was full and on Friday morning the Wood Ducks
were swimming on it. The impact on the nearby Myall River and the downstream
Myall Lakes from the diversion of this water was insignificant. We would
have liked a much bigger dam but were not allowed to have one. The dam has
never fallen below about 99% full and overflows every time it rains, as do
our water tanks. I think Chris Sanderson's idea to use google earth to help
determine water policy has much to reccommend it.
