Yesterday, Friday 28 October 2005, we heard a Fantailed Cuckoo calling
at 2 a.m. It remained audibleoff and on in daylight hours until about
11 a.m. when I spotted it in the top of a dead tree - whereupon it
promptly flew off, but was heard from a neighbour's garden. I wonder if
it took any interest in our Red Gum, of which the leaves have been
visibly severely attacked by leaf skeletonizer (Uraba sp.) caterpillars.
Through the years we have oten heard Fantailed Cuckoos calling at night,
and not only in spring - at least two records in May (different years)
several years ago.
