A few people have helpfully pointed out that it was Leaden and not Satin
Flycatcher that I
saw on the Gold Coast. I am not familiar with these species and the birds
looked much closer
to Satin than Leaden in the field guides (blackish rather than greyish).
However I had a look
at the article on flycatchers in the Jule 2003 Wingspan that pointed out
exactly this problem
(and even talked about the dubiousness of some SEQ records of Satin
Flycatcher!) and showed
pictures of dark Leadens that looked like what I saw, with the back a little
lighter than a
black head.
