There was an interesting article in the UK Telegraph on the reintroduction
of th Great Bustard, Otis tarda, into the UK. Apparently they hold the title
of the world's heaviest flying bird. Males can weigh 50lb, stand as tall as
adult roe deer and have a 7ft wingspan.
Once they were an impressive sight on the grassy plains from the West
Country to the Scottish Borders. They have been extinct in Britian for 170
years.
