Hi Bruce
Saw your refernece to red-rumped parrots in Sydney.
Red-rumped parrots, like crested pigeons, have been making an assault on
Melbourne now for a few years. They have been present at Braeside metro
park [Edithvale] for some years now, and I have seen them in Dandenong
and along bike tracks in Knox and along the Yarra [ not far from Banyule
Flats wetlands].
Once upon a time this species would have been considered a species of
the rural grasslands and the people in the Mallee near Birchip and Swan
Hill actually call them 'grassies'.
Is there some sort of relationship to the similar movement into
Melbourne of crested pigeons [for example, their move into Jells Park,
reported to me by birders, Keith Johnson and Ken Harris]?
