In reply to Colin Scouler's inquiry I contacted Ian Hutton who is at
present on Lord Howe.
He replied
Hi Peter,
the Chaffinch has never bred here at Lord Howe - but every other summer
one to five turn up - presumably from New Zealand with the southeasterly
winds at that time- usually seen around the airport- and stay a few
days,
occasionally a few weeks. Sometimes also Greenfinch and Goldfinch turn
up
similarly. So if you visited Lord Howe once , when these birds were
here,
you might presume they were common; but they dont stay too long.
The same with Shining Bronze cuckoo- 1 or 2 turn up in summer -
sometimes
seen away from settlement e.g. Boat Harbour
