Red-backed Kingfisher

Hi All

Here in NW Vic the Red-backed Kingfisher, in 1998 &1999 in particular, is 
a fairly common bird in the spring/summer period.  One of their favourite 
nesting sites is in the lumps of soil and roots that are exposed and 
lifted when large Belah trees are blown over (even in banks the nest 
burrow is usually quite short).  It is still nice to see them.

An atlasser in Merbein (near Mildura, Vic) reported to me yesterday that 
he had a group of 7, perhaps 8, RbK's together, on the power line in 
front of his house.  I have never seen more than two together, although I 
have seen 5 or more nests in the space of a kilometer or so.  

Is it common to see groups?  Do they group to migrate and, for that 
matter, where do they go for our winter?
