Does a twitcher's ticker tick faster when he/she adds a lifer to his/her list?
In my experience the twitcher's ticker appears to tick faster when he/she
believes the lifer is about to appear.
And I really understood the derivation of "twitcher" when with a famous
English birder we went to see, hear and tick the Scrub-bird at Two People's
Bay. We got there in the afternoon and by our departure at night all 3
Aussies had seen it but not our companion. "Twitching" was an
understatement - he was electric with frustration, positively scarey to be
near - and when we returned in the morning he was still so tense he
couldn't even follow our directions to where one was in clear view because
he couldn't keep himself still long enough. Fortunately he eventually found
one!
