Drought years undoubtedly bring out the crakes and rails, but also I think
that this factor is superimposed on a combination of absolute abundance, and
innate shyness or lack of. My thoughts on a ranking of shyness/sparseness are:
easy to see/abundant/not-shy:
the gallinules,
Buff-banded Rail,
Baillon's Crake
medium difficulty/less abundant/more shy:
Australian Crake,
White-browed Crake,
Bush-hen
difficult/sparse/shy:
Lewin's Rail,
Spotless Crake,
Red-necked Crake
Chestnut Rail
