Build Your Own Computer Day - 2004

complete set of photos over here

Around 10am on Saturday 7 August 2004, a strange wave of activity flurried around the Electrical Engineering building. A bunch of women started carting old hypertec computers from the CompSoc office all the way to the seminar room in K17.

By 11, desks had been set up in the seminar room, computers were laid out, and most of the 28 participants had made their way to uni. Wasting no time, they promptly began to dissemble the computers.

By lunchtime, most of the computers were dissembled, most of the bellies were growling, and most of the chicken from oportos was on its way.

While most of the attendees munched on burgers and drumsticks for lunch,

some of the volunteers preferred another type of chip:

After lunch the assembly process began

but power tools made the whole experience way more ..interesting:

After running a bunch of very successful tests on each computer, a Linux install was attempted on one. Unfortunately all efforts were quenched by a broken CDROM drive sabotaging the install process.

All in all, a rather successful day, with lots of fun, zooming, jelly, crackers, and nice, aged, hardware :-). An absolutely huge thank you must go out to the volunteers, Ada, Hui Yee, Pauline and Sarah for making the day possible, and all the people who turned up, for being so enthusiastic!

If you missed it, you MUST come next year!
