Wondering what electives to do next semester? Have a look at the student handbook: (link below)

http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/2009/

Search by faculty you are interested in, and have a read. The links should tell you what prerequisites are required and if it is in second semester, along with a little description of the course.

If you still can’t decide here’s a list of electives that you can take: (link below).

http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/seng/Free-electives/index.html

Standard Program

the elective does not play a specific role in the Software Engineering program it is your chance to pursue a course in an area in which you are interested or which you would like to develop. They can be used for ”one off” courses, or for prerequisites needed for courses to be done later in the program.

Combined program

In the combined programs the free electives are exploited to pursue courses in the ” other ” program. In this case the free electives should be used wisely to ensure a smooth progress through both programs. For more information on combined programs see programs.

Don’t forget to use rectangles for your timetable! The link is http://mahler.cse.unsw.edu.au/rectangles/

Are you already thinking about your enrolment for next semester?

Annoyed by having to wade through pages and pages of timetable
data on the UNSW web site to work out what to study?

Matthew Conolly and Nik Youdale have the answer … they’ve built
a web app that assists students to plan timetables … something
not currently provided by UNSW …

        http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~rectangles/

It’s loaded up with the 09s2 timetable now and ready for you to
sort out a study plan … before enrolments commence.

It contains data for *all* UNSW courses, not just CSE, so tell
all of your non-CSE friends about it as well.

If you’re wondering how to get a website at www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~username, then this amazingly detailed post will help you how! And the answer is…

Stick your index.html into your public_html directory! Every user account gets one by default, and it is in the root folder of your cse account. If you want to share a file with friends on CSE, just put the files inside public_html, and make sure to update their permissions with chmod.

chmod 0755 filename

Don’t put anything you don’t want others to see in your public_html though…

UNSW Unimail hasn’t had IMAP for a while, and the new introduction of zMail brings IMAP but also brings along with it a convoluted Windows Live system that very few linux fans are going to agree with. And so, we’re going to show you how to forward your unimail/zMail to CSE (or any other email service), so you can access it over IMAP.

You’ll first have to change your identity with UNSW IT services, at the following URL:

https://idm.unsw.edu.au/idm/user/login.jsp

Add an alias for your emails with the ‘Update Alias’ button if you want to replace z#######@student.unsw.edu.au with something like firstname.lastname@student.unsw.edu.au. Then, click on the ‘Update Delivery’ button to set the email service you want to forward your email to.

If you need a guide on how to set your email client to read your CSE mail (Thunderbird, OS X Mail, iPhone, etc), you’ll find one here at the CSE faq.

If you're wondering where to find free labs at CSE, this guide is for you.

CSE has a very large computer system, with 13 labs available to undergraduates in the engineering prescinct. That’s right, 13 - not 10. If you gave feedback in previous sessions to the stureps on the Physics Undercroft labs being unavailable to the general cse population, then you’ll be glad to know that the 3 labs underneath Keith Burrows/Physics Theatre now boot into linux by default, and are open to all students. Make sure to check the lab utilisation before coming along though:

You can check the utilisation for all labs on that page also!
