Seminar Information
Each seminar group does four things:
1. Give the seminar
Give a 45-50 minute seminar on your topic.2. Write a report
Write a report on your seminar topic - this can simply be the material from the seminar, or it may include extra material for which there was no time in the seminar. You should also post the report online in the subject wiki as part of the post seminar support material (#4 below).Write the report in latex or html. Submit it on cd and provide 3 printed copies. Submit to the school office before 3:30pm on the day of your seminar. The title page should contain the subject code and name, the year, the seminar title, the names of the students in the group, and a one paragraph abstract.
3. Produce a DVD of the seminar
Record the seminar and then edit and add to the footage and assemble a DVD. The DVD should be a record of the seminar. You may include additional supporting material as desired to help explain the content.
we'll provide a mini dv recorder and a 60 minute tape on the day of the seminar. The edited video of the seminar is to be submitted on dvd (2 copies) to the school office by 3:30 pm on the friday of the next week after the seminar (and return the mini dv tape at the same time). Technology permitting we'll distribute copies of the dvd to interested students at cost of materials and copying time (ie we don't intend to make any profit from them).
If you need access to dv editing facilities speak to roland and we'll arrange a session for you in the mac lab.
4. Post seminar support material
Provide post seminar support material online:
-
post your report on the wiki and correct errors in it
-
monitor the forum for questions about your topic and give reasonable assistance
-
posting 2 or 3 assignment topics in the assignment forum -- on the day of your seminar
Lab based seminar groups also:
-
set up the lab for the lab exercises
-
post the lab exercises in the lab question forum -- on the day of your seminar
-
email solutions and markers notes to cs3441.tutors@cse.unsw.edu.au -- on the day of your seminar
-
spend time with the tutors going over the exercises and solutions -- in the week of your seminar
-
maintain your lab to support the exercises -- throughout the period the exercises are being attempted
Assessment
The seminar is assessed as groupwork and all group members are awarded the same mark - however marks for individual group members will be reduced if they have made little or no effort. Each of the 4 components above will be given a grade out of 10 and the final seminar mark will be their sum scaled to a mark out of 20. All students will vote on a grade for the seminar and the post seminar support material for each group and this will be taken into account when considering the grade awarded.
Getting started
Give your group plenty of time. Meet together early in the session: divide the tasks and work out a timetable.
